There are over 20,000 IT professionals employed in Lithuania, and more than 4,500 students are enrolled in various IT study programs at 15 higher-education institutions across the country.

Multinational computer, IT and technology corporation IBM is to establish a joint research centre in Lithuania, in partnership with the Lithuanian government, based on a 5 years' agreement. The center will conduct research in nanotechnology, life sciences, healthcare innovation and intellectual property for innovative management. Lithuania and IBM will share equal rights to the intellectual property and R&D commercialization, such as patents, IP licenses, products and prototypes that result from the research center's activities. It will also involve scientists from Lithuanian universities and other institutions focused on developing innovations that contribute towards the development of a knowledge-based society in Lithuania. This will enable the Lithuanian centre to become a focal point for healthcare, life sciences and nanotechnology in the Baltic region.
